Call for Papers: Lavender Languages & Linguistics Conference 25

Rhode Island College, Providence RI

April 20-22, 2018

The Lavender Languages Conference series has a rich history of examining language use and representation in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and/or queer life, as well as language and sexuality more broadly. The Conference broadly defines discussions of “language” as including all areas of semiosis: pronunciation, lexical choice, syntax, semantics, conversational structures and styles, discourse studies, life stories and other narratives, literary texts, scientific and historic documents, print media, the meanings encoded in spatial and temporal practices, sign languages, non-verbal communication, and communication through photography, cinema and other visual arts. Historical as well as descriptive studies are welcomed, and so are performance-centered presentations and poster displays. While the language of presentation is English, research on languages other than English are welcomed and encouraged.

The Conference proudly maintains a “no attitudes” atmosphere to ensure that all attendees will benefit from a welcoming, supportive and collaborative conference space.

Call for papers

The conference program has always included papers addressing a wide range of topics, and we hope to see that diversity maintained at Lav 25. We invite abstracts for presentations which explore site-specific relationships between language and sexuality within broader contexts of social, cultural, linguistic, and gender-sexuality theories. This year, papers and panels that address future directions for lavender language inquiry are particularly welcomed.

The Lavender Languages and Linguistics conference website (https://wordpress.com/page/lavenderlanguages.wordpress.com) provides a list panels being organized to which you are invited to submit. You are also welcome to post your proposal for an organized session and post call for submissions for your session via the conference website. Please contact Elijah Edelman (conference on-site coordinator) eedelman@ric.edu to arrange for the posting. Please contact David Peterson (conference program coordinator) davidpeterso1@unomaha.edu for more information regarding the abstract submission.

Abstracts should be no more than 250 words, and should include the presentation’s title and the presenter’s name, affiliation, and email address. The abstract should describe the paper’s focus, research method, findings and ties to lavender language conference interests. The abstract should also indicate the preferred mode of presentation: single paper, organized panel, or poster display.

Proposals for poster sessions, single papers, and organized panels will be evaluated by the conference’s Scientific Committee in terms of quality, significance, and relevancy to linguistic inquiry. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by January 22, 2018.

All paper presentations, including those within panels, will be a maximum of 20 minutes.

Deadline for individual abstracts and panel proposals: October 2017
